Struggling with the Partner Acting Like the Victim
This is such a common theme. You definitely are not alone in experiencing this.
It’s this unbelievable situation when you are the one who has been betrayed, hurt, shat on, yet he is making it all about him.
You can’t get through to him that it is not about him. You want him to hear your pain. You're getting desperate ... more desperate if that’s even possible. You may be fearing that you might break or have an emotional breakdown. You don’t want to leave him, but you’re afraid he won’t be able to provide what you need.
You may be asking: “Will he ever be available, or should I get out now?”
The Childhood Scripting & Nervous System
This taps into his childhood scripting. It’s a program that runs quietly in the background, and wakes up under high stress levels and specific types of stressors that he hasn’t (yet) learned to manage.
His nervous system switches, he becomes dysregulated, and he is unable to hold steady for you. He is unavailable in every sense.
I know this doesn’t help you right this second, but he can learn to get through this. Some men find it harder than others. It depends on their life experiences to date and their go-to behaviors when young. It also depends on their willingness to learn and actually try new ways of dealing with it.
This is all about doing something different to experience different results. Bank the useful, discard the useless. We rewire the system for permanent change.
When he “gets it,” it will start a positive feedback loop, and he becomes proactive in his own recovery. This is what we (him working with me or another guide) need to get to: him taking control over his own development and the repair of the relationship.
Yes, two things at once.
The Developmental Deficit & The Escapes
Unfortunately for you, he needs to do some very hard, uncomfortable work to change his behavior under pressure. Most likely, he has managed to avoid dealing with “his stuff” until now.
His discovery has highlighted his developmental deficits. Whether it was porn, massage parlors, sex workers, affairs, validation-seeking, or drugs and alcohol, those were the escapes that helped him avoid dealing with his internal states.
Looking around at other people, you can see this same avoidance in other extreme behaviors: sports and fitness, dieting, shopping, information rabbit holes, gaming, gambling, binge-watching, etc. Some people “check out” until the stress passes, then go back to “pretend normal” mode.
He also needs to attend to YOU.
He needs to find his place … his role. As husband, father, brother, son, friend, etc. He doesn’t quite get it deeply, viscerally, I mean, that life is not all about him, his fears, or any discontent he has stemming from his childhood.
What Real Change Looks Like
He is currently in a bubble of preoccupation with personal-interest. When he eventually changes his perspective and comes out of that bubble to understand and accept his situation, what he’s done, why he’s done it, and the roles he plays, remembering he signed up for marriage, a coming together, a unity, you will see a profound change in who he sees himself to be ... and his behaviors.
He becomes the protector, the lookout, the deeply interested, and solid person you had hoped for in the beginning.
Those two things ... his “stuff” and you/the relationship ... are actually three things. The relationship itself being the third. Author Stan Tatkin speaks to this in his books and podcast interviews (Wired for Love is a great book on this).
Why Wives Can't Fix This (And Who Can)
More hard truth: I don’t think you are the one who can get through to him.
I’ve not yet seen wives be able to do this. I am not saying it’s impossible … just that I’ve never seen it work.
What I do see, however, is other men getting through to them. Men who know exactly how your partner is feeling, what he thinks, what he fears and where he is stuck. I don't have data on female therapists being able to break through this specific wall, but I suspect the highest impact comes from male-to-male support and guidance.
Just an observation, not me trying to sell you on my service. I truly feel for you and all the partners who are dealing with this. It astounds me, the devastating effects and depths of pain and disorientation betrayal causes for partners.
It’s my work to help your partner get through his stuff while simultaneously helping you and the family heal from this betrayal, and hopefully, heal the relationship.
