How do you move out of shame? You clean up your mess.

I’m not talking about the shame taken on as a child, that belongs to someone else and needs to be given back (a later post), but the shame of what you’ve done more recently.

What’s it feel like to have done something effortful and possibly difficult?

It feels good, right?

  • You’ve changed a wheel on your car under difficult circumstances, after getting a flat tyre. After the trip you feel like you accomplished something.
  • You’ve worked all day doing yardwork, cleaning and moving rubbish. You sit back, admire your work, and feel satisfied.
  • There’s been a complex problem at work, maybe something didn’t add up or someone has messed up, you came in, worked on it, dug deep and long, solved it, and it works. You did it, and now you can dwell in the success.

The shame that arises after discovery and betrayal is immense. It can be debilitating. It is for many.

The solution is to clean up your mess.

"Easily said, David, but how?"

  • You take responsibility, 100%. Ain’t no one going to do this for you.
  • You take a deep breath, give yourself, I don’t know, 60 seconds according to Terry Real, to feel the shame, then you start the clean up.

You get out the lawn mower, fuel it up, and start mowing.

You come across an obstacle, a stone or an old plank of wood in the yard, you move it and keep mowing.

You do everything necessary to clean up the mess. Everything.

You don’t stop until it’s done (and by the way, you’ll be a new guy by then … Your Name 2.0. Still you, just a new, improved version).

That’s how.

There’s much to do. Infidelity and/or addiction is a mess and you need to learn a few things. By the end of it, you’ll be able to make sense of the shame, be stronger, more reliable and dependable, more robust and more satisfied with yourself than at any time in your life previously. Your partner and kids might even like you.

Did I say humble? You'll be humble too. A healthy humble. You cleaned up the mess.
