Traditionally, the bride's father walks his daughter down the aisle and places her hand into the groom's hand …
This is an act known as "giving away the bride."
What is he communicating in this simple gesture?
Property vs. Protection
Long ago, this action meant a father was transferring ownership of his daughter as property to the groom.
Today, most people view this tradition differently. It is now seen as a symbol of family support, a parent's blessing, or a way to honor the close bond between a father and his child.
I’ve read many modern couples skip the physical hand-off or the traditional question from the officiant ("Who gives this woman ...?").
The Weight of the Gesture
My opinion is that this gesture ... the father placing the bride’s hand in the groom’s ... is one of the most important symbolic acts that can help an unfaithful man gain a different perspective on his addictions or compulsions, lack of presence, infidelity and his role in the relationship.
Every time I mention this ceremonial or symbolic action when speaking with unfaithful men, it seems to land as intended.
My intention is to get these men to stop and think:
“Holy shit. I’ve messed up. I’ve dropped the ball. This guy (soon-to-be father-in-law) has entrusted me with protecting his daughter, and I’ve messed up.”
This gesture says loud and clear: “She was in my care, and now she is in yours.”
You Messed Up. Now Fix It.
To the unfaithful men out there … if it hurts to hear this, it’s meant to.
You fucked up. Now fix it. It's tough. I'm here to support and guide you.
