It’s interesting that we think about the past, in the present.
We think about the future in the present, too.
Rarely do people stay in the present and be OK with staying in the present.
The Disbelief and the Bluff
Your partner has realized that she has not been your focus. Part of her disbelief in all this is that you convinced her you were “here for her”. Evidence shows you were not.
You bluffed her into thinking she was your priority. You may have bluffed yourself, too.
Being present really means being available, interested, and “with her.”
- If you are both together in the same space, then it’s then.
- If you are at different locations, then it is then and there as well.
Why Your Distraction Triggers Her Radar
When your facial expression or body language demonstrates that you are elsewhere … in your own thoughts, anxious or worried, distracted … she picks up on this.
Remember, her threat radar is always on, and she relates your distraction to betrayal. A hyperlink has been established, written ... coded. It’s not a conscious decision that she makes. Her whole being, her mind-body, says loud and clear, “Danger!” ... and she goes on the defense or attack or shutdown. Whatever track her mind-body takes, she is now not present and entering a different state.
It doesn’t matter what has sparked this change. You could be innocently thinking about money, paying a bill, work, a friend, car maintenance … even recovery-related tasks … her seeing you distracted when she is feeling vulnerable will set off her nervous system’s response.
What Real Presence Is (And Isn't)
If you are seeking repair or renewal, it’s time you became present in the relationship.
What I am NOT talking about:
- Being submissive in an unhealthy way
- Being a doormat
- Being enmeshed with her
- Being “co-dependent” (a controversial word, I know)
- Being at her every beck and call
What I AM talking about:
- Joining the relationship … 100% in.
- Choosing her.
- Knowing your role(s) and accepting them 100%.
- Knowing your priorities and when and how to manage them.
- Knowing your boundaries.
- Having self-discipline and awareness.
- Knowing when you are drifting off, going to some other place, and when and where this is OK.
Developing Discernment
You’re not a robot, however there are practices that you can do to improve your ability to be present and what to prioritize. Your discernment on what is important and when.
Yes, it’s a tough call to turn around old, entrenched behaviors … but you can do this. It takes time and effort and practice. It’s worth it.
You need a guide. Book a call. Let's chat and make a plan. It's difficult at first then gets better and easier. Joy and satisfaction become the new normal. Remorse is seen for what it is ... a "tell" that something is off.
