More Bessel van der Kolk on Safety…

From: The Body Keeps the Score:

“Study after study shows that having a good support network constitutes the single most powerful protection against becoming traumatized. Safety and terror are incompatible. When we are terrified, nothing calms us down like the reassuring voice or the firm embrace of someone we trust. Frightened adults respond to the same comforts as terrified children: gentle holding and rocking and the assurance that somebody bigger and stronger is taking care of things, so you can safely go to sleep.

In order to recover, mind, body, and brain need to be convinced that it is safe to let go. That happens only when you feel safe at a visceral level and allow yourself to connect that sense of safety with memories of past helplessness.”

Betrayal Shock

When infidelity is discovered, the wife’s loudest, early reactions are often:

  • “WTF, who are you? Why did you do this?”
  • “Is there more?”
  • “This is so much worse than my worst nightmare.”
  • “How were you capable of doing this?”
  • “Is there something wrong with me?”
  • “Does this mean divorce and a broken family?”

And later:

  • “You’re not here for me.”
  • “I don’t feel cherished or chosen.”
  • “You are more interested in yourself than you are in me.”
  • “Oh, this makes sense now!”
  • “This makes no sense!”

He Hopes It Settles Down. It Won't.

If your husband/partner has been discovered, he really does not know what to do next. He hopes it all settles down and goes away.

It doesn’t, and it won’t without guidance.

I guide men in taking ownership and fixing this mess. I provide him the coaching so he can provide you the safety that you need.

Whether you stay or go is not the question. Not yet, anyway. Perhaps you’re still gathering data to make that decision.

Is there hope? I think so. If he can turn around, there is.

That is what I am good at … helping men understand the gravity of the situation, your pain, your anger, your disappointment … and take charge of owning it and fixing it.

Unfaithful men tell me often that they needed to hear what I had to say. It has helped them stop their behaviors and repair their relationship.
