What Happens When Your Safe Person Becomes the Source of Pain?

In her book The Betrayal Bind, trauma expert Michelle Mays poses a devastating question: What happens when your partner—your primary safe person—instantly becomes a source of acute danger?

For betrayed partners, the result is a profound, disorientation-inducing blindside. You are left sitting in the devastation of secrecy, lying, and broken trust, wondering why the person who caused the damage seems so eager to just "get past it", avoid it or conversely, attempt to compensate with anxious behavior.

This disconnect exists because he is pre-occupied with his own emotions and feelings and unable to attend to yours. Result: a massive Empathy Gap.

Closing the Empathy Gap

An unfaithful partner often cannot comprehend the depth of betrayal trauma until he puts himself in your shoes and actively chooses to look at the fallout and take ownership, without defensiveness, minimization, or self-pity.

When a man defaults to "I said I'm sorry, why are you still mad?" or he crumbles and freezes and his little boy voice comes out, he is proving that he does not get it. He sees your grief as either an attack on his character, or evidence that he cannot hold your pain and he feels incompetent, rather than a direct wound caused by his actions.

He needs to see the unvarnished reality of what happened—not to drown in a shame spiral, but to drive real, permanent behavioral change.

True relationship renewal begins when he learns how to:

  1. Step up and acknowledge the gravity of the blindside.
  2. Does what it takes to provide safety for you ... proactively, intentionally and consistently.
  3. Be patient as your healing takes time.
