How Mindset Programming Actually Works: Taking Control of How You Change
We are all who we are and behave as we do because of what came before us—our past experiences, the people we associated with, how they treated us, how we treated them, and every memory and emotion stored along the way. Of course, genetics play a part too.
Most of us accept that our past shaped us. Yet, as adults, we oddly forget one critical truth: We can use that exact same process to intentionally change who we are today.
Intentionality vs. Default Living
Just as past environments programmed your old habits, a new environment can program new ones. You can intentionally cultivate a space of health and growth by:
Choosing safe connections: Surrounding yourself with people who value nurturing, support, and genuine health.
Feeding your mind: Consistently reading, listening, and absorbing material that challenges old patterns.
Mastering new behaviors: Practicing relational skills with the same dedication you’d use to learn a new software, master a device, or operate a machine.
We learn, adapt, and rewrite our internal software all the time. The only difference is whether you let it happen by accident—or do it with intention.
The Blueprint for Lasting Change
When I completed the SMART Recovery facilitator training, I was interested in their research-backed model of how transformation actually happens. The process isn't an overnight miracle; it moves through distinct, proven phases:
Pre-contemplation: Not yet recognizing the need for change.
Contemplation: Admitting that something isn't working.
Preparation: Mapping out a strategy to do things differently.
Action: Taking the initial, uncomfortable steps.
Practice & Maintenance: Fine-tuning new habits until they become second nature.
Real transformation requires a structured program. Whether you are moving toward a healthier future or steering away from destructive or unhelpful behaviors, the process is the same:
Desire —> Consideration —> Action —> Fine-Tuning —> Adoption.
Your mind is constantly being programmed by what you expose it to. The only question left is: What are you choosing to program it with today?
